There is no morning where you wake up feeling ready. If you are waiting for that, you are waiting for something that does not exist. The only honest answer to whether you are ready comes from data, and the data comes from NBMEs.

Do all of them

Short answer: every one you can get. Here is what each one gives you.

  • It is the closest thing to the real exam. Nothing else gets you as near to the question style, the way stems are built, and the reasoning the exam actually wants from you.
  • One score is a snapshot. Several is a trend. A single number tells you where you are. A sequence tells you whether you are climbing, flat, or slipping, and each of those calls for a different response.
  • Different forms expose different gaps. No two NBMEs weight the systems the same way. Working through all of them gives you the widest picture of where your preparation is thin.
  • Timed forms build the stamina. The tiredness in the back half of a full-length assessment is real and you have to train for it. Do not let exam day be the first time you sit one.

Three signs you are ready

  • Your scores stopped swinging. There is a stable range now instead of a twelve-point spread between sessions.
  • That range is where you want it. For Step 1, sitting consistently around 70 to 75 percent correct on recent forms lines up with a comfortable pass. For Step 2 CK, judge it against your own target.
  • Nothing surprises you anymore. Your wrong answers are detail-level slips, not whole topics you have never seen before.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Delaying the first NBME because they are afraid of the number. It is the single most counterproductive thing you can do. That first form is not a verdict, it is a diagnostic. The sooner you take it, the sooner you know which systems need the work and how far you really are from your target.

Putting off your first NBME because you are afraid of the score is choosing to stay lost because you are afraid of the map.
